Student to spend six weeks in Borneo researching orangutans

Senior psychology major Megan Draper is embarking on the trip of a lifetime as she heads to Borneo, in Southeast Asia, to study what she loves: orangutans. The self-described "lover of primates" is ditching the desks of Penn State Brandywine to conduct research alongside world-renowned scientists at a remote field site in the rain forest, and she's earning credits for it, too.

Alumnus reminisces about Brandywine's inaugural 1988 THON team

Philip Kurland, '90 accounting, roamed the collegiate halls of the Brandywine campus in the late 1980s before heading up to University Park to finish his business degree. While at the Philadelphia suburban campus, he embraced college life by getting involved with student government and THON. In a recent interview, Kurland shared his fond memories of those days.

New campaign celebrates 'what's new' at Penn State Brandywine

Penn State Brandywine is kicking off the 2013-2014 academic year with a new campaign that celebrates the campus' recent multi-million dollar renovation project, new academic and athletic programs, global programs, unique internship opportunities and more. The Hello Brandywine Campaign will officially launch on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 4:30 p.m. in the new Main Building Student Lounge with remarks from Interim Chancellor George W. Franz, light refreshments and optional tours of the new facilities given by Brandywine Lion Ambassadors.

Professor blogs about explorations at Tyler Arboretum during sabbatical

 Associate Professor of Earth Sciences Laura Guertin is kicking off a year-long sabbatical from Penn State Brandywine by exploring the nearby Tyler Arboretum. She's hiking the trails, volunteering her time, attending programs and events and blogging about her experiences. Guertin, known on campus as "Dr. G.," represents Penn State Brandywine as a member of the Tyler Arboretum Board of Trustees and is excited to share her explorations with the community.

Pa. teachers go 'back to school' for science at Penn State Brandywine

Science teachers from around Pennsylvania participated in two workshops at Penn State Brandywine that explored new approaches in teaching Earth and space science. The two weeklong workshops, which took place in mid-July, covered astronomy and plate tectonics and were funded through the National Science Foundation's Targeted Math Science Partnership (MSP) program as part of Penn State's Earth and Space Science Partnership.

Penn State Brandywine hires new chief of safety

 Lewis Sweigart has been named Penn State Brandywine's new chief of safety and police services. Sweigart previously served with the Penn State Mont Alto Police Department, where he worked as a public safety officer for nearly five years. Prior to that, he served as a waterways conservation officer for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission and concurrently served as a part-time police officer at Penn State Harrisburg.

Incoming freshmen get a head start on their Penn State studies

Twelve incoming freshmen at Penn State Brandywine are spending their summer earning credits, making friends and getting the lay of the land through the campus' Be A Lion program. These summer session courses are designed to help students get acclimated and get a head start on their college careers in a more relaxed setting during the summer months.

'The Fault in Our Stars' chosen as Penn State Brandywine's Common Read

Penn State Brandywine has chosen the novel The Fault in Our Stars as its 2013-14 Common Read. Throughout the upcoming academic year, students, faculty, staff and the community are encouraged to read this book and come together for various events to discuss its themes and ideologies. Some teachers also will assign the book in class and use it during academic discussion.
