Who goes to the Brandywine Learning Center?
In a word – everyone! First-year students, students who struggle with a particular class, and even students close to graduation have come to the Brandywine Learning Center to go over a project with a tutor or to get help with a tricky course that’s outside a student’s comfort zone.
Do I really need tutoring?
"Tutoring” does not mean you are struggling; it simply means you are being careful and conscientious with your work. Some questions to consider:
- Do you have any questions about your assignments that you would really like someone to answer?
- Are you unsure of what you need to know before you take a big exam?
- Does it seem like there is simply too much reading for one of your classes, and you do not know how to begin to tackle all of it?
- Do you just want to rehearse a presentation with someone prior to giving it?
If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, you are encouraged to make use of the resources offered through the Student Academic Success Center.
What subjects does the Brandywine Learning Center work with?
All non-science, non-math general education courses as well as upper division psychology, business, and HDFS courses. This includes: accounting, economics, psychology, HDFS, CAS, history, philosophy, nutrition, criminology, and statistics for the social sciences. If you’re not sure whether or not we offer support for a given course, ask!
When should I schedule an appointment?
A good guideline is, “when you first have questions about a class.” The more time you give yourself to work on an assignment or task, the better the result will be. Scheduling one appointment before a hefty midterm exam will limit the amount of meaningful help you can get, but setting up a regular meeting with a tutor several weeks before your test will have an appreciable effect on your performance. Try and schedule an appointment when you have your first doubts about your classes.
How do I schedule an appointment?
Email Amy Forsberg ([email protected]) to schedule an appointment.
What if I need to cancel my appointment after I set it up?
Students can cancel their appointments through Starfish.
Will my instructor know if I am going to tutoring?
No, not unless you want us to notify them that you attended a session. The Brandywine Learning Center protects the communications of students who make appointments with tutors and will only relay information to an instructor (for something like extra credit) if a student expressly directs tutors to do so. Otherwise, everything discussed during an appointment with a tutor is kept confidential.
Do tutors know what I am supposed to do for an assignment?
Although tutors have not necessarily read your course textbook or articles that were assigned to you for a project, they have a lot of experience in helping students figure out what is expected for an assignment. Please make sure you have an assignment sheet for a project you have questions about, or a copy of your course reading if there is something in it that you do not understand.
Can tutors help with homework?
Yes! However, we cannot do your homework for you. Nor can we help you with anything like an online quiz or test.
