About Us

Mission Statement

Penn State Brandywine Counseling Services provides short-term, multi-theoretical, individual, couples, family, and group counseling, health and wellness outreach and prevention programming, consultation to the campus community, and referral resources for longer-term support services.  We also assist with crisis intervention in collaboration with the Office of Police and Public Safety.

We value diversity and promote building a safe space that is inclusive and appreciative of all backgrounds and experiences. We are committed to providing culturally competent services that support and understand various identities, including race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic class, size, religious beliefs, age, mental, physical, and learning abilities, gender identity, nation of origin, and political viewpoints.

What is Counseling Services?

Counseling is a specific time set aside for you to talk with a counselor about a concern or challenge you are experiencing that is impeding your ability to live a healthy and enjoyable life. It is an opportunity for you to talk about your concerns in a space where you are not judged and have access to resources that can help you find solutions.

As specialists in working with college students, staff at Counseling Services can help you address your concerns in a caring and supportive environment. Our staff incorporate a variety of evidence-based therapies, selecting those that best fit the client's needs. Some of the models used in counseling may include cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, strengths-based approaches, existential/ humanistic therapy, systemic therapy, and trauma focused therapy. We aim to help our students resolve personal concerns that may interfere with their academic progress, social development, and life satisfaction while studying at Penn State Brandywine.

Why would I come to counseling?

Counseling staff work with students regarding a variety of issues including but not limited to:

  • General Support and Guidance
  • Life Transitions (i.e. adjusting to college, preparing to transfer to a different campus, graduating, death in the family, etc.)
  • Stress Management
  • Relationships
  • Depression
  • Anxiety and Worry
  • Anger Management
  • Substance Abuse
  • Sexual, Physical and Emotional Abuse
  • Trauma Recovery

Eligibility

Counseling Services are free to all currently enrolled full-time and part-time Penn State Brandywine students.

 Confidentiality

Counseling Services places a priority on confidentiality and privacy. All communications between a client and a counselor are confidential. Your information is never released outside the Counseling Services office without a signed consent form. The only exception to this rule is if someone is a danger to themselves or someone else.
