Why Add a Minor in Marketing?
A minor in Marketing can make you a more competitive job candidate by demonstrating knowledge of core marketing principles, including marketing research, analytics, consumer behavior, and value creation. These skills are valuable across industries and can complement almost any major, helping you apply your academic knowledge to real-world business challenges and better understand how organizations connect with their customers and stakeholders.
Marketing is a broad and dynamic field focused on understanding consumer, organizational, and societal behavior and using those insights to create and deliver value. According to the American Marketing Association (AMA), marketing involves “the set of institutions and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings valuable to customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” Marketing therefore extends beyond advertising and promotion to include decision-making, consumer experiences, public policy, and the exchange of value throughout society.
A Marketing minor can also strengthen your preparation for graduate school and professional programs. By combining your primary area of study with marketing knowledge, you demonstrate intellectual curiosity, interdisciplinary thinking, and a willingness to develop skills beyond your major.
A Marketing minor can help you:
- Develop practical skills in marketing research and analytics.
- Understand consumer needs, motivations, and decision-making.
- Learn how organizations create, communicate, and deliver value.
- Strengthen your résumé and broaden your career opportunities.
- Apply marketing principles to your primary field of study.
- Demonstrate interdisciplinary thinking to employers and graduate programs.
