Penn State Brandywine prepares to celebrate Black History Month

MEDIA, Pa. — Penn State Brandywine is providing programming and events throughout the month of February to celebrate Black History Month.

Below is a list of ways the campus community can participate in this month dedicated to honoring Black history.

Wake Documentary Screening and Panel

Student Screening and Panel Discussion — Thursday, Feb. 3 at noon, Student Union – 114-117

Snow Date: Feb. 10 at 11 a.m.

Community Screening & Panel Discussion

Thursday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m., in Tomezsko – 103-104

Snow Date: Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.

Jake Mejias, a 2021 Penn State graduate who attended Brandywine, recently produced a documentary, "Wake," surrounding the aftermath of George Floyd's murder and the protests that followed in Philadelphia.

Students, faculty, staff and community are invited for two campus screenings and panel discussions on Feb. 3 and Feb. 10. Both screenings will be followed by a panel, whose members will participate in a Q&A session as well as react to the film and curate a thoughtful discussion among other panelists and attendees.

Soul Sounds Performance

Tuesday, Feb. 8, at noon, in Student Union –  114-117

Take a "hip trip" through the evolution of Black Music with live performances and multi-media. Enjoy a range of music from Motown, gospel, blues, and Urban Contemporary. Open to Penn State Brandywine students, faculty and staff. Sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.

Crazy Bob Game Show

Thursday, Feb. 10 at noon, in Student Union – Parsons Hall

Test your knowledge of Black History. Prizes will be awarded. Open to Penn State Brandywine students, faculty and staff. Sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.

Celebrate Douglass Day

Monday, Feb. 14 at noon, via Zoom

The Libraries Douglass Day team, in partnership with Douglass Day at the Center for Black Digital Research and the College of the Liberal Arts, invites you to join us for the next Douglass Day celebration on February 14, 2022 from 12-3pm. The focus is "Where did they go? Black Women in the Colored Conventions." This event is open to faculty, staff, students, and community members to come together to transcribe and index the names of women in the Colored Conventions movement. ZuZu Acrobats

Thursday, Feb. 24 at 5 p.m., in Student Union – Parsons Hall

Dancing, dish spinning, cyr wheel, gumboot dance, unicycle/bicycle tricks, chair balancing, hand balancing, human pyramid, contortionist and a special parade of African animal puppets! Open to Penn State Brandywine students, faculty and staff. Sponsored by the Office of Student Engagement.

#BWDiverseReads Book Chat

Friday, Feb. 25 at 3 p.m., Location TBD

As part of its #BWDiverseReads program, Vairo Library is encouraging readers to celebrate Black History Month by reading a title by a Black American. Suggested readings can be found here. At the end of the month readers will gather to discuss their selections and experience. 

Celebration of Hip Hop

Friday, Feb. 25 at 8 p.m., in Student Union 114-117

Learn the history of hip hop through activities and listening experiences. Open to Penn State Brandywine students.
